Plain-language glossary

Terms we use with partners and donors, explained simply.

Grant

An assistance instrument that gives a recipient substantial freedom to pursue the project purpose, as long as activities follow the grant's terms.

In-kind equipment grant

A non-cash donation of equipment that can generate income, such as cell phones, sewing machines or food processing units.

Contract

Provides for the acquisition of goods or services. The donor specifies measurable outputs and can use contractual and legal remedies if the terms are broken.

NGO (non-governmental organisation)

Any non-profit, voluntary citizens' group organised at local, national or international level, made up of task-oriented people with a common interest.

FBO (faith-based organisation)

An organisation that conducts its affairs in accordance with its religious beliefs.

CBO (community-based organisation)

A non-profit organisation that serves the disadvantaged in the community where it is based, and is registered with the local government.

Beneficiaries

The targeted population that a project serves and impacts, directly or indirectly.

IGAs (income-generating activities)

Any endeavour that economically empowers a person, group or organisation to earn a profit or economic gain.

Funds expended

Funds count as expended only when spent on an allowable, billable item and backed by original receipts and supporting documents.

Match (in-kind) contribution

Grant recipients co-finance projects with a minimum of 10% of the donor's amount. It can be money, or non-monetary such as free use of a training room or donated staff time.

Volunteering

The commitment of time and energy for the benefit of society, the community, the environment or individuals outside one's immediate family, undertaken freely and without concern for financial gain.
